Completing Trauma Cycles: Why you have to Feel It To Heal It

Completing the trauma cycle begins in the body, and most emotions only need about 90 seconds to move through your system.

When you allow yourself to fully feel an emotion without pushing it down or checking out, your nervous system naturally completes its cycle of activation, release, and resolution.

But when you dissociate, go numb, detach, or “leave your body,” that cycle gets interrupted. Think of all the times you just kept going after something intense, disturbing or traumatizing happened to you. That emotion doesn’t just dissapear. Instead, it becomes stored as unprocessed emotional energy.

Over time, these incomplete trauma cycles build up and can show up as inner tension you can’t explain, emotional reactivity or irritability, chronic stress and burnout, or even physical symptoms linked to unresolved trauma.

This is why so many people still feel stuck, even after years of “working on themselves.”

Dissociation: The Body’s Survival Response

When you check out of your body during everyday life, it’s called dissociation.

It’s a protective response that forms when something in your life once felt too intense to fully experience. When emotions feel overwhelming or unsafe, the nervous system shields you by shutting down.

But when dissociation becomes habitual, the body loses its natural rhythm of regulation. You may find yourself moving between two extremes: hypoarousal, which looks like numbness, detachment, and low vitality, or hyperarousal, which feels like anxiety, agitation, and emotional overwhelm.

Neither state allows emotions to complete their 90-second processing window. Instead, the body continues to carry the charge, creating long-term nervous system dysregulation.

This is exactly why I work with bodywork, somatic healing, and energy work to help clients process emotions their bodies never had the chance to complete. If you’re interested in a session you can read more about my work here.

Completing the Trauma Cycle

The good news is that healing is absolutely possible and it’s not as hard as you think. It just takes consistency.

It begins with reconnecting to the body and creating enough safety to feel what’s there in real time. Even the heaviest emotions can shift when you stay present long enough for the nervous system to do its work.

This is where somatic healing, bodywork, and energy work can be life-changing. In session, I hold grounded and compassionate space for you to talk to parts of yourself. I open a space for your body to complete the cycles that were interrupted in your system, so you can finally release the charge of past experiences that you’ve been carrying for months and even years.

Because true freedom isn’t found in avoiding your feelings.
It’s found in letting feeling them all the way and letting them move through you.

If you’d like support moving through this work in the body, it’s something I specialize in. You can learn more about me here or book a session.
